El Greco
El Greco(Greek, 1541 - 1614)

El Greco spent his life crossing geographic and artistic borders to create a completely unique language in art history. He started as a traditional icon painter in Greece, absorbed the rich colors of Venice, and eventually found his true spiritual home in the historic city of Toledo, Spain.

In Toledo, his art shed all traditional rules to capture a raw, mystical feeling. He stopped trying to paint the physical world accurately, choosing instead to paint visions of inner faith. He stretched human bodies into long, elegant shapes and used flickering, dramatic light to make his altarpieces pulse with a heavy, restless energy.

El Greco left behind a body of work defined by pure emotional and spiritual power. By refusing to conform to the artistic trends of the sixteenth century, he created a timeless legacy that continues to shock, inspire, and deeply compel viewers today.
